A native of Cadillac, MI, Charlie earned his bachelor’s degree in Music Performance from Alma College in Alma, MI where he studied percussion with David Zerbe. Notable performances with the Alma College Percussion Ensemble include the Notre Dame Collegiate Jazz Festival (2006-2009). The ensemble received Outstanding Performance awards and Charlie received awards as a soloist. The ACPE also performed at the 2007 Centrum Jazz Festival in Port Townsend, WA, as the first collegiate ensemble to be invited. Charlie also appears on the ensemble’s recording entitled “Both Sides Now” released in 2009. He was later invited to play the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival with the Legacy Percussion Orchestra under the direction of David Zerbe.
Charlie received his master’s degree from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX studying with Doug Howard, Kalman Cherry, Drew Lang, Ed Smith, and Jon Bryant. He has remained in the Dallas area as an active freelance musician, performing with such groups as the Allen Philharmonic, the Las Colinas Symphony and Lyric Stage. Charlie is currently the Percussion Director for Ennis ISD and also teaches privately.
